“Guangdong Technion University was established in 2015, in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China and welcomed its first undergraduate students two years ago. Guangdong Technion’s faculty and facilities provide a state-of-the art platform for innovative research and student training.
For the past two years we have been running three undergraduate programs for local and international students: BSc in Chemical Engineering with a minor teaching program in Environment, BSc in Materials Engineering, and BSc in Biotechnology.
Guangdong Technion symbolizes a new era of education, research, and innovation in engineering and life sciences in the Guangdong Province of China.”
Professor Eliezer Shalev, MD, Vice Chancellor, Guangdong-Technion-Israel Institute of Technology
“What Technion has done to advance the Israeli economy through student and staff research and innovation is an example for Chinese universities to follow. If many universities in Guangdong and China do the same as Technion has been doing in Israel, an innovation-based economy will emerge.”
Professor Peihua Gu, Provost of Shantou University
The establishment of Guangdong Technion is a result of a cooperative agreement signed on September 29, 2013, between the Technion and Shantou University (STU). Guangdong Technion is a not-for-profit research university. The new institute will grant Technion engineering degrees at all levels – Bachelor, Masters, and PhD – and maintain the same high academic standards of education, research, and innovation for which the Technion’s Haifa campus is world renowned.
“The Guangdong-Technion Israel Institute of Technology will help to further the advancement of education, research, and innovation in engineering. Opening up Technion and Shantou to these cultural dialogues is very important.”
Professor Peretz Lavie, President of Technion
The vision of Guangdong Technion is to be a world-class international technological university campus, carrying out cutting-edge research that will encourage entrepreneurship and technology transfer and foster a high-tech industrial ecosystem in Shantou and Guangdong Province. The agreement is backed by the Guangdong Government, the City of Shantou, and the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF).
Professor Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel Laureate, is the acting Vice Chancellor of GTIIT. He visualizes GTIIT as an institution excelling in Environmental Sciences with the potential for growth in other engineering fields.
“As we embark in Shantou on a program in environmental sciences, I look forward to expanding, in the near future, to programs on energy resources and human health.”
Professor Aaron Ciechanover, Vice Chancellor of GTIIT
Teaching and research at Guangdong Technion is carried out in the English language. Activities at the institute began with an initial research focus on the multidisciplinary fields of environmental engineering and biomedical sciences. Technion is currently recruiting top postdoctoral fellows who will be trained to become future faculty, and it is also seeking tenured and tenure-track faculty for the new campus. The new institute’s faculty will spend their first year at the Technion campus in Haifa where they will develop classroom materials and launch new research collaborations with Technion faculty to serve as a springboard for independent research programs for the campus in Shantou.
