Building a bridge from the past to the future
The 20th century had many incredible engineering breakthroughs. From the vacuum cleaner to the internet, these innovative feats have laid the foundations for the world we live in today.
The 5th annual Rube Goldberg challenge is a homage to the significant technological inventions of the past century.
The 2020 Challenge: Create a multi-stop, chain-reaction machine that includes at least 20 elements that represent important technological inventions from the 20th century. For example: the airplane, television, Internet, radio, antibiotics and automobile.
So grab your friends and get building!

- Teams should consist of 3-10 students from the same school, but not necessarily from the same grade
- Student participants must be between 10-12 grade.
- A teacher can act as an advisor, but the construction needs to be done by students
- Must include 20 inventions from the 20th century
- 15 elements must be “active components” (i.e. when one element causes action to a different element) of the machine
- 5 elements should be incorporated as props (i.e. decorative elements)
- Needs to be comprised of everyday, recyclable material
- The video must be between 2-3 minutes long
- If the video includes music, the music must be legal for use
- Machines will be judged based on their complexity, ability to use the theme, and their construction /artistry
- First place winners receive a full one-year scholarship to Technion International*
- Second Place- 3D printer for your high school
- Third Place- Arduino Kit
*Prizes will be awarded per student only once
Each team must submit:
- Team Information Form (sent after registration)
- The video must show the machine run in its entirety.
- The video can be taken in multiple shots and edited.
- If the video is edited, a teacher or administrator must sign a statement on the “Team Information Form” that attests that the machine worked without any human intervention at least once.
- All materials will be submitted via DropBox. A link will be sent to all the registered groups. The groups will drag all files (video, forms, lists) into the DropBox
