Prof. Joshua M. Grolman
Research Field: Our laboratory aims to develop molecular-level force sensors to detect damage visually on a wide variety of materials, just like the bruising of our skin. We synthesize molecules called ‘mechanophores’ that change color or fluoresce when exposed to strain, and using our methods, we have been able to convert materials like wool fibers, epoxy paint coatings, and even tendon tissue into strain indicators. Projects are available for visiting students exploring mechanophore activation of different failure modes in composite materials.
Required Background: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related fields
Prof. Noy Cohen
Research Field: In my lab, we aim to work on soft materials that are 3D printed. The available projects include testing 3D-printed materials under different mechanical loading cases.
Required Background: Simulation, Math.

Prof. Yoav Kalcheim
Research Field: Our research group works on understanding and harnessing properties of quantum materials for applications, especially in the field of neuromorphic computation. We focus on a family of materials called Mott insulators which exhibit an insulator-metal transition to develop novel resistive switching devices with the aim of enhancing the energy efficiency of machine learning at the hardware level.
Required Background: We are happy to consider students with high motivation and capabilities for an internship, preferably with a background in physics and/or electrical engineering.
