Research Field: The umbrella project focuses on developing an autonomous platform for crop monitoring and phenotyping. The final system shall consist of a robust, rugged, off-the-shelf unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) suitable for field operations (e.g., the Agilex Bunker or Hunter), equipped with GPS-RTK, on which fixed sensors and a robotic arm capable of carrying interchangeable sensors will be mounted. This UGV platform will also serve as a take-off/landing platform for a small drone that will conduct “overview measurements” covering a few square meters around the ground-based platform. Various sub-projects that deal with specific aspects of the overall project are available, such as UGV path planning and navigation, integration of the robotic sampling arm on the UGV,
operation of the sampling arm, and UGV-UAV interaction.
Required Background:

Research Field: The MDO research group specializes in structural and multidisciplinary design optimization, addressing the complexities of real-world engineering applications through innovative research. Our interests span a diverse range of topics, including the optimization of load-bearing structures, offshore wind farms, lightweight cable systems, and seismic-resistant designs in structural earthquake engineering. We focus on developing and applying advanced numerical methods for system response analysis and design optimization. Our work incorporates techniques such as finite element analysis, analytical gradient computations (direct and adjoint methods), and automatic differentiation, with a strong emphasis on gradient-based optimization. To support our research, we
develop custom scientific computing software in Julia, Python, and MATLAB.
Required Background: We are looking for students with a background in structural, mechanical, or aerospace engineering, and who are familiar with numerical methods, computerized structural analysis, and who like to program.

Research Field: The student will join the Extreme Loads on Structures Lab (ELSL. Our research group focuses on the behavior and design of structures under extreme loads. Much interest has been given to the effects of blast and impact loads on structures.
We develop computational models to better understand the dynamics of structures and structural damage, and develop solutions based on analytical and numerical tools. We also study the behavior of reinforced concrete members using experimental and numerical studies in our lab.
